Meet Katie
Curious about people.
Committed to possibility.
What helps people thrive? That question has shaped my approach to education, leadership, teams, and organizational change.
The human side of leadership
The true measure of leadership is what becomes possible for others.
Leadership is about creating the conditions where people feel seen, heard, valued, and empowered to grow. It's about fostering trust, cultivating belonging, removing barriers, and opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.
When we lead with empathy, intentionality, and courage, our impact reaches far beyond individual accomplishments. It creates possibilities that ripple through people, families, organizations, and communities.
A little about me
I'm Katie Carpen, PhD—an academic leader, speaker, and facilitator with more than 15 years of leadership experience across higher education, organizational development, and academic transformation.
I've worked alongside faculty, organizational leaders, students, and cross-functional teams navigating complex decisions, competing priorities, significant growth, and change.
Some of the most enduring lessons have come not from the plans themselves, but from people: how trust develops, what happens when perspectives differ, why belonging matters, and how empathy and accountability can coexist.
These experiences inform my speaking, professional reflections, and continuing interest in the human side of leadership.
What I believe about leadership
Strong relationships.
Honest conversations.
Empathy and accountability belong together.
Understanding others doesn't require avoiding difficult decisions or lowering expectations.
People need to be heard during change.
Meaningful engagement asks us to listen, not just announce what comes next.
Conflict can deepen understanding.
Different perspectives can surface assumptions and make room for better dialogue.
Relationships shape meaningful progress.
Strategy matters. So do trust, belonging, and the people bringing it to life.
